Iron Fortified Calf Serum (IFCS) is obtained from special formula-fed bovine calves. Its superior level of transferrin promotes a higher performance in cell culture applications.
Description:
Iron Fortified Calf Serum (IFCS) is obtained from special formula-fed bovine calves, which are fed a low iron diet. This diet leads to higher transferrin levels in the blood of the calves. To counter the iron deficiency found in the serum, the calf serum is supplemented with a proprietary iron complex.
The higher transferrin levels enables an uptake of large amounts of iron without creating harmful radicals. This brings the biologically available iron content in the serum to a much higher level than it would naturally occur and improves the performance.
Iron Fortified Calf Serum (IFCS) is therefore often used in vaccine production since it shows an equal performance to fetal bovine serum (FBS) and thereby generates a cost-effective alternative.
